You are able to take a couple extra days off work, you are planning on spending more time outdoors, and you may even have a fun vacation planned for you and your family. However, nothing can put a damper on fun summer activities quite like a dental emergency. Here are some tips to keep your smile safe from disaster throughout the duration of the summer season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use a Mouthguard While Playing Sports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is definitely a good idea to head outside and keep active in order to stay healthy, but if you like to play contact sports, you are much more likely to experience an oral injury. Fortunately, this doesn\u2019t mean that you need to be sitting inside and avoiding the field. Instead, all you need to do is ask your dentist about custom-made mouthguards. This way, you can protect your smile while avoiding a broken or knocked-out tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limit Sugary Drinks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you prefer sweet tea, lemonade, or a frozen pi\u00f1a colada in the warm weather, your teeth may be in trouble if you are having too many. Drinks that are high in sugar put you at risk for developing cavities and other oral health issues. Save these beverages for occasion and sip on some water afterwards. When you decide to have one of these beverages, use a straw to limit the contact that the liquid has with your teeth so you can decrease your chances of developing tooth decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go Easy on Summer Treats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While your family is away from the classroom or office, you are bound to spend some of your time indulging in snacks. The problem is that having too many starchy or sugary snacks can be harmful and your oral health may suffer. You don\u2019t want to be spending that extra time in the dental chair to have cavities filled. By avoiding unhealthy snacks, you can prevent decay. If you are looking for something to munch on, choose something nutritious, like carrots, string cheese, or salted almonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">See Your Dentist Every Six Months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not think there\u2019s anything wrong at the moment, but your regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandcoastdentistry.com\/contact.html\">dental visits<\/a> are still important to your oral health. When you catch problems early on, dental emergencies can often times be easily avoided.
