Research has found an association between poor oral health, particularly gum disease, and certain respiratory conditions. Although gum disease doesn’t necessarily cause lung disease, maintaining healthy gums may be an important part of protecting your overall health.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the tissues supporting your teeth. It typically begins as gingivitis, which can cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums.

Without treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. This more advanced form of gum disease can damage the bone and tissues that hold your teeth in place.

Periodontal disease is largely preventable and manageable with good oral hygiene and regular professional dental care.

How Could Gum Disease Affect the Lungs?

Your mouth contains hundreds of different types of bacteria. When plaque accumulates around your teeth and gums, harmful bacteria can increase and contribute to inflammation and infection.

Because the mouth and respiratory system are connected, bacteria and other microorganisms from the mouth can potentially be inhaled into the lungs. This may be particularly concerning for people who are older, have weakened immune systems, or already have respiratory conditions.

Researchers have found associations between periodontal disease and respiratory conditions such as pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, these relationships are complex, and more research is needed to understand exactly how oral bacteria and inflammation may contribute to respiratory disease.

Protect Your Gums and Your Lungs

Taking care of your oral health doesn’t require complicated steps. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss between your teeth daily. Getting dental cleanings twice a year is also recommended as a professional can remove hardened tartar that you can’t eliminate with brushing and flossing alone.

It’s also important to avoid smoking and other tobacco products. Tobacco is a major risk factor for gum disease and can also seriously harm your lungs.

If your gums frequently bleed, appear swollen or red, feel tender, or seem to be pulling away from your teeth, schedule a dental examination.

The potential connection between gum disease and lung health is another reminder that oral health isn’t isolated from the rest of your body. While researchers continue investigating the relationship, keeping your gums healthy is a smart way to support your overall well-being. Regular dental visits, good oral hygiene, and healthy lifestyle choices can help control harmful oral bacteria and reduce your risk of periodontal disease.

About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey Skupny invites you to Island Coast Dentistry if you’re suffering from gum disease.
