The summer months are fast approaching! While you may be busy planning your family’s beach vacation, camping trip, or backyard cookout, don’t forget about your oral health! Keeping your smile healthy during your summer vacation will help ensure that you have a great time. Here are 5 summer oral health tips so you can get the most out of your much-needed time off.

#1: Drink More Water

Beer and soda are both staples at summer barbecues, but sticking with water is the best choice to protect your smile. Dark beer and sodas can stain your teeth over time. In addition, due to their high levels of acidity, both of these beverages can wear away tooth enamel. In contrast, drinking tap water actually promotes healthy teeth! Water from the tap usually contains fluoride, an important mineral that strengthens teeth and reduces the risk of tooth decay.

#2: Eat Teeth-Healthy Foods

Speaking of barbecues, make sure that you incorporate smile-friendly foods into your summer diet. Specifically, eating foods with high levels of calcium, phosphorous, and Vitamin C can boost both your overall and oral health. Vitamin C protects gums against gingivitis, while calcium and phosphorus help strengthen enamel and build strong, healthy bones. Here are some common sources of each:

  • Calcium is found in milk, plain yogurt, cheese, and other dairy foods
  • Phosphorus is found in fish, lean meat, nuts and more
  • Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits as well as tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and more

#3: Wear a Mouthguard

A simple bad pass of a basketball or a rough football tackle can easily result in a dental emergency. That is why it is so important to wear a protective mouthguard when playing recreational sports. These days, you can personalize your mouthguard by picking from a wide range of colors.

#4: Do Not Use Your Teeth as Tools

If your family is going on a camping trip this summer, be sure to pack all the tools you may need, including a knife or pair of scissors. The last thing you want to do is use your teeth to open a packet of instant coffee or other packaging. Never use your teeth as tools! Doing so is an easy way to accidentally chip or crack teeth.

#5: Visit Your Dentist

According to the American Dental Association, biannual dental checkups are a critical part of maintaining a healthy smile. If you have not already visited your dentist by the time summer arrives, do not waste any more time. A dental exam and professional cleaning will help ensure you start the season with a healthy, refreshed smile.
